The book traces the life of the political genius who pulled the sinking ship of the Congress out from the troubled waters and restored the party its glory. This book depicts her journey from the warm lanes of Italy to becoming the daughter-in-law of the first family of India (Nehru-Gandhi) and her emergence as a powerful figure in the Indian polity and one of the most influential persons on the Globe. Unlike the conventional biographies that take the shape of history, this book charts the metamorphosis of the shy Sonia into a charismatic leader of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) coalition at the Centre. It is rather an evolution of the mind and the personality.

Behenji - a Political Biography of Mayawati
by Ajoy Bose

Mayawati has changed the face of politics in India, turning old assumptions upside down and restructuring power equations entrenched for centuries, if not millennia. The path she has blazed through the Byzantine political system of Uttar Pradesh has been a unique tour de force. Not only has she been the chief minister four times, but she has done so by overturning the established electoral traditions of a state that virtually invented modern Indian politics. With her in-your-face political style, unabashed display of accumulated wealth and mercurial nature, she is, perhaps, the most enigmatic Indian politician for decades.

In this book, Sabhlok writes energetically and with great hope for India's future. He had a vision of a new India and wants to share that with us. He begins by asking , why India wanted independencein the first place - namely, to achieve individual freedom. Then he asks whether India is truly free today. He goes on to analyse the factors that are constricting India's freedom and finally delves deep to find the reasons behind the rampant corruption and blatant inefficiency in Indian governments. Nehruvian socialism becomes his prime suspect.Assesing a range of disparate facts, Sabhlok confirms that socialism has indeed been the bane of India. He recommends that India should break free of Nehru's legacy of socialism, and at the same time should significantly strengthen Nehru's legacy of democracy. He postulates a set of policies of freedom whose proper implementation, he believes, will clean up India's corrupt politics; infuse efficiency and vigour in the Indian bureaucracy; and will eliminate India's abject poverty. Sabhlok's analysis, supported by research, makes use of a repertoire of knowledge and experience that includes working for 25 years in India and Australia.

Fresh out of grad school, Allen Raymond joined the GOP for one reason: rumor had it that there was big money to be made on the Republican side of the aisle. From the earliest days of the Republican Revolution through its culmination in the second Bush White House, Raymond played a key role in helping GOP candidates twist the truth beyond recognition during a decade of crucial and bitterly fought campaigns. His career took him from the nastiest of local elections in New Jersey backwaters through runs for Congress and the Senate and right up to a top management position in a bid for the presidency itself. It also took him to prison.

This classiest collection of essays have been revised, expanded and updated for this book. A good part of it is taken up with Gandhians and pseudo-Gandhians, Marxists and anti-Marxists, and of individuals the author has known or studied, admired or disliked. ‘Inside every thinking Indian there is a Gandhian and a Marxist struggling for supremacy’, says Ramachandra Guha in the opening sentence of this wonderfully readable book of ideas, opinions and reflections. A substantial portion of the book expands on this salvo: it analyses Gandhians and pseudo-Gandhians, Marxists and anti-Marxists, Nehruvians and anti-secularists, democrats and Stalinists, scientists and historians, environmentalists and cricketers — in short all those who comprise the intellectual life of thinking Indians today.
