The Invisible CEO

Mudra began life on March 25, 1980 with a seed capital of Rs. 35000 entrusted to me by Dhirubhai Ambani. The Invisible CEO my first book gives you the Mudra story from the most credible source that it can possibly have – me, its founder. Looking back, I realised that Mudra was an extremely unusual agency headquartered in an unusual place and manned by a band of really unusual people. We were not the prevalent stereotypical ‘agency types’. Despite the fact that the odds were stacked against us, we finally received acceptance from ‘the club’ as it were.

It might sound strange to today’s generation who probably have a very different perception of Mudra, but the agency in the eighties was the proverbial odd-man out. I wrote it with one single aim. To demonstrate that no matter how different you are, or how much of an ‘odd man out’ you feel, if you believe strongly enough and long enough, it is possible to continue to be who you are and to make a success out of doing what you love. The way you love doing it. At the end of 23 years we had a Rs. 740 crore agency, which was also one of the top three agencies in the country, to prove this point.

The book basically breaks up into three sections – the first talks about Mudra’s journey, the second is a compilation of Lessons that I have learned from life, the third another compilation of the best advertising over the past year. It would be difficult to pigeonhole this book into an existing category, as it is not a “management reference book”, neither is it a “self help book”, nor a “case-study” book, but yet it straddles all these categories.

My second book Desi Dream Merchants is a bit like a sequel to the first. This too is about Mudra but it gives a detailed overview of the entire team building process that played a crucial role in the success of Mudra. It is slightly different from the first book because I have handed over a major portion of the storytelling to a few of my team members from a cross-section of functions, geographies and experiences. What you will discover, as I did to my delight, is that despite the dissimilarities of their profiles their accounts share an amazing similarity in points of view. It only corroborated my long held belief that shared vision is the secret of any teams’ success. This book too, is divided into three sections. In the first I talk about how necessity became the mother of innovation for us, a fact that Mudra was well known and acclaimed for. You must remember we entered an industry governed by multinational stalwarts. It was some pretty sharp thinking from my team, good old common sense and the embracing rather rejecting of ones roots that have combined to formulate Mudra’s winning strategy, against a backdrop of such time tested experts. The second section continues to share lessons I have learned over time and in the third, I talk about some advertising that I liked over the past year.

Both books serve as ideal travel companions. They are both easy to read and they let you mull over and daydream about what you’ve just read, making it easy to pick up the threads again with no sense of discontinuity.

P.S. The sections “What I’ve Learned’ and ‘What I’ve Liked’ have been culled from my fortnightly articles published in The Business Standard.

The Invisible CEO is a repertoire of very deep thoughts and reflections of a person, who till recently, led one of India’s best advertising agencies. Desi Dream Merchants

This sequel to The Invisible CEO brings to the forefront the virtues of a Great Team that helped put Mudra - a desi ad agency catering to the needs of Indian businesses - firmly on the ad map. In his amiable style, the author enlivens the book with anecdotes and stories of the

Exodus by Leon Uris - The Leon Uris classic made a profound impact on me when I read it some thirty years back. Though I never read it the second time, I seem to remember a good part of its content. It taught me that if you have a dream strong enough and for long, no matter who you are, where you are, you too could realise your dream. After all what’s life without a dream to die for...this is what the book taught me.
