A hilarious comedy of errors, Five Point Someone is a brilliant and perceptive debut novel by Chetan Bhagat, who recalls what seem to be the best and toughest years of one’s life. Superbly paced and crafted, the book intrigues the reader – as much for the funny accidents as for the stark realities – about the trials faced by susceptible teenagers during their happy days at the university. Through the friendship of three “five-pointers” at the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology, he delves into the world of Indian youth – within and without - a way of life that is not just fun but sensitive and challenging too. For the “system” we aspire to be a part of in our formative years pushes us two extremes when all that matters in life looks like an evaluation on a 10-point scale!

It is such a situation that is delineated with sparkling witticism and serious intent. This could be the story of any young person(s) in any institute of the world. The endearing characters, Hari, Alok and Ryan are so delightfully real and impish, “probably the last people on earth you want to ask about getting into IIT”. Vodka, weed, Pink Floyd, movies, sports and a love affair with a professor’s daughter make up their jerky joyride - quite contrary to our common perception of a nerd’s life at IIT. With time, they graduate from being boys to men as they pass out of the institute and learn to appreciate the values that IIT upholds. This book will give a vicarious joy to one and all - especially to those who missed out on the spirited mischief and camaraderie of campus life.
